Hot Topic Theme: Feedback and Assessment

With the move the Canvas, and the new affordances provided to us in using Teams and Zoom in the classroom, we are exploring how UTS educators are taking these up and putting them into practice in innovative ways. 

In this webinar, Evana Wright, and Chris Croese from the Faculty of Law, UTS share their practices in designing and delivering formal and informal assessment feedback online. 

Evana will present on the Disruptive Technologies Lightning Talks and Encyclopaedia – an online assessment that facilitates the collective generation of knowledge by students and the use of internal feedback to support achievement of student learning outcomes.  

Chris will demonstrate an easy way to use Office 365 online to monitor and engage with students, and provide feedback as they work in groups, but without physically or electronically ‘sitting in’ on the groups. In this way, feedback is provided in a non-threatening way; students do not feel intimidated by the teacher’s immediate presence, but they know that their work is being monitored and commentary will be provided.

Dr Evana Wright, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Law

Dr Evana Wright is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Law and teaches in the Legal Futures and Technology Major and the Masters of Intellectual Property Program. As Director of Postgraduate Courses, Evana has been responsible for LX Transformation project within the Faculty of Law. She adopts innovative scholarly methods and assessment drawing on reflexive and transition pedagogies by creating opportunities for students to share their knowledge and research as well as supporting student transition to study in law.   

Chris Croese, Lecturer, Faculty of Law

Chris Croese is a Lecturer in the Faculty of Law, teaching in the large core subjects of Remedies and Contracts. Chris has been experimenting with the potential inherent in new online teaching technologies, such as Canvas, Microsoft Teams and other Office 365 applications, H5P and Mentimeter, trying to find a way to enliven and encourage participation in online tutorials, when participation is not formally assessed.

Hot Topics are curriculum and teaching themes that have emerged in UTS from student learning experiences, student feedback surveys (SFS), consultations and other strategic projects. They are a series of professional development and engagement opportunities to enhance courses and provide longer-term support through community building and sustained critical dialogues.
