Backing up is important! Discover options for storing your media, plus get across copyright, accessibility and privacy guidelines.
You should keep a copy of media you upload to Kaltura. There’s a few reasons for this:
Keeping a local copy of your media on your computer and/or a local USB hard drive is one option. You may wish to purchase a portable 1TB USB hard drive on which to store all your work.
While backup services are not explicitly a storage option they should always be considered as part of your course materials storage and backup strategy. You never know when a hard drive might fail, you lose a USB drive, or when you might accidentally delete something you need.
Onedrive is an example of a UTS supported back-up system to consider. Find out more about Onedrive on the Microsoft support website.
You should read UTS Library’s Copyright advice page. Media with copyrighted material in them should at least be behind a password protected portal like Canvas for class use.
You should always caption your media to make it more accessible to all viewers.
Content hosted in Kaltura Media identifying students, or content contributed by students, constitutes an educational record and the State Records Act 1998 (NSW) applies.
That act requires that the content be protected from disclosure without student consent. Disclosure in this context includes use outside of the class such as posting student content openly on the Internet. Faculty who intend to post original student work in such a manner may do so with the students’ permission or by providing an opt out option for individual students.
For additional information on privacy, see the UTS Privacy Regulations and the Records Management Program at UTS.
Be careful to not store or accidentally record and share material which might constitute protected health information in Kaltura . For more information on the Health Records Information Privacy Act 2002 (NSW) please see the UTS Privacy Regulations.
