Belonging is a dynamic emotional attachment that relates people to the material and social worlds that they inhabit and experience. It is about feeling ‘at home’ and ‘secure’, but it is equally about being recognised and understood (Wood & Waite, 2011, p.201)
About the Event
As we learn as a society to go on living with COVID, where hybrid ways of working and studying are no longer a temporary aberration but part of the new normal, this Valentine’s Day, we invite you to come together to consider how practices that demonstrate care, concern and kindness – for our students and each other – can become part of our everyday repertoire.
Thinking with the lens of belonging and inspired by Bali, et al’s (2019) notion of intentionally equitable hospitality, we will explore how we can design and facilitate learning spaces that help our students feel welcome, included, and valued, feel ‘at home’ in their university study, and contribute to their sense of wellbeing and community. And also, to consider how we might pay attention to the ways in which our learning spaces, pedagogical designs, and even our facilitation, can unintentionally exclude and marginalise.
In this forum, join us as we draw on Alisa Percy’s recent blog Building Belonging in 2022, with a focus on the emerging Building Belonging Infographic, to discuss and share the concept that underpins our own belonging and draw from curriculum and co-curriculum practice.
Hear from our student panel for their perspective as students and their practice in study support roles for aspiring students coming to UTS in 2022 through the U@Uni program.

What is FFYE?
The UTS FFYE (First and Further Year Experience) Program is an institutional wide program, designed to support the successful transition of students in their journey through their degrees and into the workplace. The program has three foci: curriculum, people and the university infrastructure.
One key element of the program is community building. FFYE Forums (regular meetings) and FFYE community (MSTeams) provide spaces for sharing, learning and ongoing collaborations connecting research, practice and student experience. Contact Kathy Egea (FFYE coordinator) to join.
