Recently, we hosted our second community of practice of the year, with three presenters showcasing their individual approaches to educational media. We covered a range of methods, including filming demonstrations, student briefings and editing in Adobe Premiere Pro. Please note, throughout these presentations and Q&As we occasionally make reference to the LX.lab Media Space studios which are available for staff to use.

As always, we’ve got the recordings and a quick recap for anyone who missed out.

Beyond the static powerpoint presentation: using Premiere Pro to add life to your video lectures

First off we had Chris Croese, a Law academic who has been using Adobe Premiere Pro to enhance PowerPoint presentations for his pre-recorded video lectures. Adobe Premiere Pro is an editing program currently available to all UTS staff via the Adobe Creative Cloud using your own staff email and password. In this example, Chris was able to edit his narration, cut to other videos, add sound effects, visual effects and more. See the presentation and Q&A below.

Filming demonstrations of correct clinical practice for assessment

Next up was Madeleine Frost, who took the initiative to film a clinical practice demonstration with her phone. This is lo-fi approach is simple and convenient, and it is certainly effective.

It should be mentioned that for academics searching for an alternative to filming top down videos such as filling out documentation, the LX.lab Desktop Studio is available for bookings as well. At our last community of practice, animation academic Pat Grant also showcased this studio for drawing demonstrations as well.

From start to finish: creating assessment briefing videos with industry leaders

Last but not least was Samuel Yu from TD school. Sam had filmed industry partners from the City of Sydney council to give assessment briefings for his students. It should be noted while Sam did have budget to hire an editor, he was able to film the interviews himself using equipment borrowed from the LX.lab.

Stay tuned: our next event is going to be a special one!

Thank you to our speakers for sharing their knowledge, as well as everyone who attended the event.

Mark your calendars, as our next event is going to be extra special! For our next community of practice, we’re aiming to once again unite multiple universities for a cross-institutional event. The last time we did this it was a huge success, so be sure to register early down below!
