CILOs and PLOs can be assured in Canvas-Quiz-based exams. Aligned Outcomes must be added to the Canvas Question Bank which the quiz draws its questions from.
Caution should be taken when assuring UTS learning outcomes via online quizzes. The effectiveness of a quiz-based assessment is particularly complex and highly dependent on question design, question randomisation and selection, and time and technology constraints. If you are considering a quiz-based CILO or PLO assurance process, consult with your Faculty learning and teaching team to ensure you are following best practice in assessment design.
Aligning Outcomes with a Question Bank
- Navigate to the Canvas Question Bank containing the questions you will use in your exam. At the bottom of the right-hand menu, you will see ‘Align Outcome’.
- Choose the Outcome being assured in your quiz from those listed. (To learn how to import Outcomes see Importing CILOs or PLOs into your Canvas subject as Outcomes [LINK]).
- At this stage, you must enter the quiz score at which students will be assessed as having met the requirements of the CILO or PLO. To do this enter the percentage required in the ‘Set mastery for any score at or above’ field.
The ‘mastery’ score is the percentage that students have to reach before they are assessed as having achieved the learning outcome. For example, a mastery score of 65 means that the student has to earn a 65% or higher on the aligned Question Bank questions. If your exam quiz contains questions from another question bank, these will not count towards the CILO or PLO achievement calculation.
- Click the ‘Import’ button to align the Outcome with the Question Bank.
- Outcomes aligned to the quiz Question Bank will be listed under ‘Aligned Outcomes.
- You can add more Outcomes to the Question Bank by clicking ‘Align Outcomes’ & repeating the process described above.
