The basics you need to get ready for teaching.
There are a few things that will make your life a lot easier if you ensure that they’re set up before you’re due to start teaching. This allows you to get the admin out of the way and focus on your students and your content once classes start.
Some of the websites you will need to access are located on different UTS channels. The links below show where you’ll need to go, and who to contact if you have an issue.
Here’s what you’ll need:
All new UTS employees are provided with an ID number and password upon starting. This is your key to all of the services and platforms you’ll need to use. It’s important to have this before starting, as it will allow you to log in to platforms where subject materials are stored, as well as spaces where you’ll communicate with your students like MS Teams and Zoom.
You’ll receive an email with details about your ID and instructions for password set up and profile activation when your employment is confirmed. If you have not received these details, contact your subject coordinator to get it set up before teaching starts.
You will need a staff card to be able to access various spaces around the UTS campus. Check the Get a Staff ID Card page (log in with UTS ID and password) for instructions on how to get yours.
StaffConnect is the UTS Intranet portal. Visit the Starting at UTS page for full details on getting set up, getting paid, accessing security services on campus, compliance training and more.
All UTS subjects are stored in Canvas with their own unique subject sites. These sites contain information including the subject outline, important texts and readings, activities and assessments for students, message boards and more. Your subject coordinator will connect you to your subject site.
myTimetable (sometimes known as MSA+ or Allocate+), which is UTS’s timetabling system, is where you access your class list and information about where your classroom is located on campus.
Your class list contains the names of the students in your class. This should be obtained from the Allocate+ platform when available, which should be before you begin teaching. Bear in mind that up until the census date, this list will be subject to change.
Once you have your timetable information, you may wish to find out more about what kind of audiovisual (AV) tools (e.g. computer, projection screens) are available in your classroom. The AVS site contains information about AV technology used at UTS and may be helpful in giving an overview before you get started.
Details such as beginning and end of study sessions, holiday periods, study breaks and more can be found in the UTS Academic year calendar in the UTS Handbook.
