Learn about the process of implementing exam provisions, so that impacts of disabilities and/or ongoing medical conditions can be accommodated.
Exam provisions aim to accommodate the impact of a disability and/or ongoing medical condition while maintaining academic standards. This is not intended to give students an advantage over others, but rather to ensure all students have the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge.
Students need to be registered with the Accessibility Service to apply for exam provisions. This means they have met with an Accessibility Consultant to discuss the impacts of their disability and/or health condition on their learning and provided medical documentation from a relevant registered health professional.
Some examples of exam provisions include:
Subject Coordinators can view the status of students who have requested exam provisions through the Access database. Approved faculty admins can run the Needs Extra Provisions (NEP) report from CASS.
Extra time is the most common exam provision. This is entered by the Exam Team in the Student Administration Unit (SAU) by using the Moderate Quiz feature in Canvas for AI invigilated and timed LMS exams, and the assign to feature in Canvas for take-home exams.
Please do not remove exam provisions that have been entered and quality checked by the Exams Team. UTS is legally obligated to meet exam provisions, so it is vital they remain in place.
For class faculty-based exams, Subject Coordinators may receive requests from Accessibility Services about approved exam provisions that need to be implemented. In addition, an NEP report can be run for confirmation of all students in the class with approved exam provisions.
Academic staff will need to add additional time by using the Moderate Quiz feature in Canvas and assign different availability windows using the Assign to feature in Canvas for students with approved exam provisions.
Some students may require accessible formats to ensure they can access the exam.
Scribes and/or readers Scribes and Readers follow strict requirements to provide the following tasks:
Scribes and Reader roles are performed by students trained and employed by Accessibility Service and SAU Exams, so that academic integrity of the exam is maintained.
