A subject schedule or outline can be a useful way of defining expectations to students and providing a clear guide to the session. Page templates have been created for use in Canvas subjects but these are only guides to be tailored to your subject. By clearly outlining weekly expectations students can see at a glance what they need to plan for and can organise themselves accordingly. On this page, we explain how to use these templates to share subject or module schedules with students in Canvas.
These templates are structured for varying levels of detail. You could choose to include a subject schedule, giving a high-level outline for the entire session, a detailed weekly overview with schedule, or an overview of a module covering several weeks. These templates are specific to your faculty. If you do not have access to your Faculty template course, please request access using this form.
Sharing a subject schedule in the ‘Get Started’ module
This first template gives an overview of the entire session at once. This is useful for subjects in a weekly structure and can outline delivery mode, weekly topics, and assessments, though these headings can be updated to better reflect your subject.
We recommend subject coordinators copy this template page into their Canvas course – adding this page between the ‘How to be successful in this subject’ and ‘Subject resources’ pages in the ‘Get Started’ module.
Sharing a detailed one-week module overview with pacing schedule
If you would like to provide more granular detail for a module spanning one week, consider using the ‘1 week module overview with pacing schedule’ template. This module overview page, to be added to the beginning of a one-week module, provides module objectives, essential learning activities, an overview of any synchronous activities, and assessment links. This module overview is particularly useful for first year subjects needing more explicit guidance, or an online week with limited guidance.
Sharing a detailed multi-week module overview with pacing schedule
Similar to the one-week module overview is a template covering a multiple-week module, using expandable sections to outline learning activities associated with each calendar week.
