Workplace learning (also known as internship, professional experience, fieldwork, clinical placements) and technology-mediated learning are two key foci for university education. However, they often remain separate discourses and practices, though the integration of workplace learning and technology-mediated learning can provide important opportunities to bridge education and work contexts, to connect with online learning networks, and to build students’ digital capacities, online professional identities and technology-mediated work practices.

For students to selectively harness opportunities afforded by mobile technology in workplace learning requires a concerted effort from students, academics and workplace educators. It is essential that they adopt a critical perspective to develop a shared understanding of how to connect and bridge different learning spaces and generate resources and activities relevant to students’ discipline and/or context.

In this workshop we will explore resources that were developed as part of an OLT funded project, aimed at helping students, academics and workplace placement educators make better use of personal, mobile technologies to connect learning and work and develop student agency.

Purpose:

The purpose of this workshop is to:

  • share new insights into ways of enhancing workplace learning through the use of mobile technology;
  • explore the online resources for students, workplace placement educators and academics; and
  • examine the role of workplace cultures and personal or professional preferences for using mobile technology to prepare students for work.

Workshop intended outcomes:

In this 90 minutes workshop participants will:

  • learn about the OLT funded project titled “Enhancing workplace learning through mobile technology”;
  • hear about the design pattern used to develop the mobile resources for learning in professional settings;
  • trial a set of resources and share own ideas and feedback;
  • share own practices of using mobile technology to enhance student learning in professional settings; and
  • develop a better understanding of the possibilities and challenges of effectively using mobile technology to enrich learning experiences on placement.
