Dr Julia Prior is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Software in the Faculty of Engineering and Information and Technology (FEIT). She won the 2018 Vice Chancellor’s ‘Strengthening the UTS Model of Learning’ Award for her project on ‘The Software Development Studio: conception, realisation and a demonstrable educational success’. Join us in the Learner experience lab for a hands-on Masterclass on her teaching approach.

Julia strongly encourages self-directed, active and collaborative learning, in an environment that provides deliberate scaffolding and support to students. This environment also offers students opportunities to experiment and iterate, while developing skills and knowledge in a holistic manner. Assessment is focused on how the student has met explicit expectations and the development of the student’s capabilities over time.

In this session, we will cover:

  • Holistic technical and non-technical skills development,
  • How ‘group work’ becomes ‘teamwork’
  • Engaging industry (external) partners and the value of mentorship
  • The impact of grant funding and scholarly research projects on L&T innovation.

Each participant should be prepared to share their response to the question:

“What is the capability/skill that you’d most like your students to develop through their learning experience in your unit (class/studio/subject etc.)?

In case you missed it, check out the photos and video from the Learning and Teaching Awards night in our wrap-up post.
