Hot Topic Theme: Feedback and Assessment

Audio feedback is recorded verbal feedback that you can create through Canvas to communicate your comments about a student’s work rather than putting them into the classic text paragraph.  

There are a number of reasons why giving students audio feedback for assignments is advantageous over the traditional text block. 

  • It’s likely to be faster to prepare and you can get more across in the time allotted. 
  • You can put more nuance and emotion into your voice than you can in written text. 
  • It’s far more engaging for both you and your students. 
  • Students feel more supported, more personally connected and have a better understanding. 
  • With the record button right next to the text input in Canvas there basically no tech hurdles. 

In this workshop, we will give you the chance to learn about and try an in-practice tested and refined framework to help you embed audio feedback as part of your teaching. 

So, while it might feel a little awkward to get started, you will soon see the advantages. 

Guest Speakers

Marty van de Weyer

Martin van de Weyer obtained a PhD in digital experience design in 2015 and has subsequently worked as a learning designer in both the higher education and corporate spaces. He has taught design practice and digital experience analysis at a range of different universities in South Australia and New South Wales over a number of years.

He currently works within the LX.Lab as a Learning Design and Technology specialist where his emphasis is on developing human centred design practice.

What are Hot Topics?

Hot Topics are curriculum and teaching themes that have emerged in UTS from student learning experiences, student feedback surveys (SFS), consultations and other strategic projects. They are a series of professional development and engagement opportunities to enhance courses and provide longer-term support through community building and sustained critical dialogues.

This event is facilitated by the Institute for Interactive Media and Learning (IML) Teaching and Curriculum (TAC) Team.Ann Wilson, Senior Curriculum Designer, Teaching and Curriculum Team (TACT).

You’ll be added into the ‘Hot Topics’ MS Teams space upon registration.You’ll be able to stay connected, view shared resources, favourite papers, blogs and website links.
