How are we preparing our students for a professional life that is unknown and where they will encounter complex social problems, disruptions and radical different ideas to their own? How can we create learning opportunities that inspire curiosity, creativity and resilience in our students and help them develop their professional identity?

These questions point to opportunities to engage students in learning through research experiences. They also speak to the need of scholarly teaching that inspires knowledge building. Research is a powerful way of learning because research is about asking questions and exploring answers. It can motivate students to get engaged, think critically, develop professional judgment skills and actively shape what they are learning. Actively engaging students in research can strengthen self-directed learning.

Students can be nurtured as researchers in many different ways and levels. For example, by engaging them with current research literature and gaps in knowledge and what research the teacher is exploring all the way to becoming an active researcher through student-led inquiry. There are many approaches that integrate research and education, for example inquiry-based, problem-based, studio-based learning.

Hear from the panellists:

Christina Ho is an Associate Professor and co-Discipline Coordinator, Social and Political Sciences, within the Communication program, based in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

Allison Silink is the Director of Academic Programs in the Faculty of Law. She also coordinates and teaches Equity and Trusts and Commercial Law. She co-convenes the UTS Private Law Research and Teaching Cluster and the Private Law Seminar Series.

Sarath Kodagoda is the Acting Director of the UTS Robotics Institute, President of the Australian Robotics & Automation Association (ARAA) and ambassador to the NSW Smart Sensing Network (NSSN).
